Whips and Chairs

Whips & Single Tails by Daydreamweaver

There are a number of very different toys which are categorized as whips, but here we focus on the single-tailed varieties: signal whips, bullwhips, stock whips, dog whips, buggy whips, horse whips, target whips, et cetera. There are huge differences between some of these types in terms of size, construction, style of use, and cost; what defines them as whips is a single striking component. In the right hands, each is capable of making that delicious cracking sound which can make some submissives go weak in the knees.

Bondage Chair by Victor Pringle

It is always pleasant to see a pretty bottom tied helplessly to a chair waiting for their top to do with her as they will. Choosing the right chair makes all the difference to the experience both the top and bottom will have.

A dining room chair can be perverted into an acceptable bondage chair. However it does not have all the advantages a custom designed chair has. With the dining room chair the bottom can only have their legs restrained to the chair leg. Their arms would have to be tied behind their backs behind the back of the chair. To prevent the bottom from raising themselves from the seat their torso would have to be bound to the back of the chair. Access to the bottom’s genital area is limited with the seat getting in the way.

Concrete Floors & AIS Kink Labs

Painting & Sealing Concrete Floors

You have this great basement, with high ceilings and tons of space. You just bought a warehouse for the ultimate community dungeon. You have decided that your garage would make an awesome play space. But the floor is a boring, grease-spotted concrete slab. This article will tell you how to turn that slab into another wonderful part of your dungeon décor.

First thing, you want to clean up any oil, grease or other spills and stains. Kitty litter can be used to soak up any large messes. Trisodium phosphate, or TSP, is a good degreaser, and can be used to scrub up any remaining stains. Use an all purpose cleaner to mop up the entire floor, and ensure the removal of any remaining litter or TSP. Rinse the floor with clean water, then let the floor dry completely.

AIS Kink Labs

As the AIS parties got bigger, more furniture was needed. As more furniture was needed, Barak needed more space to build it. Leading up to the first C.O.P.E., their entire house was filled with furniture in progress, not to mention sawdust. Thus, the Kink Lab was born. A 24′ x 24′ building where he has the space for new and better tools, and where he can build a new piece of furniture in the span of two days. And they can have dinner at the dining room table both nights.

Home Sterilization & The AIS Mobile Dungeon Teasers

Home Sterilization

Metal toys are fun to play with, but when bodily fluids are involved, they require a little more care than your average toy between uses. Sounds, knives and the like need more than cleaning and sanitizing, they need to be sterilized, too. Most of us do not have access to an autoclave, but a home pressure cooker can do the job, too. This article will tell you how.

First things first, you do still have to clean and sanitize these items before sterilizing. Use warm water and soap to remove and lube and bodily fluids or anything else that might have gotten on the items. You may want to wear gloves while doing this to protect yourself, as well. After they are clean, you can sanitize them a few different ways. Bleach or hydrogen peroxide can be used in a 10% solution to sanitize your items, or 70% alcohol will also work. After air drying, these items are now clean and sanitized, and it is time for sterilization.

AIS Mobile Dungeon

This year’s AIS (Adventures is Sexuality) dungeon at C.O.P.E. (Central Ohio Perversion Excursion) was made up of four rooms: the main dungeon, a wet room and a sensual space, which was also the daytime play space, and a theme room. The wet room was filled with massage tables, with the entire floor covered with tarps taped down to protect the carpet. This room was for any messy play or fire play, including wax play. The sensual/day space had a massage table, a cross, a spanking bench and the octagonal suspension beam. The theme room held the Scarlet Sanctuary the first night, a place for sacred touch. The second night it hosted the Littles’ Petting Zoo and then a room of electric play. These were down the hall from the main play space which held most of the AIS equipment.

Dungeon Layout and Canes

A couple more teasers for what lies ahead. Want to know more? Issue 3 will be out in two weeks!

Dungeon Layout by Perverted Imp

You have chosen the space, you have bought the furniture, you have painted the walls, and gotten a few rugs. Now what? How do you create make the most of your space? How do you keep scenes from running into each other? What kind of flow can you create? Setting up the ideal dungeon is a truly subjective matter, but allow me to give you a few tips and suggestions to make the going easier.

Canes by Toy

One of the oldest forms of corporal punishment involves the use of canes. Canes have been used to strike the hands of insolent lads in school to more severe strikes of the thighs and buttocks as a form of corporal punishment for adults. The types of canes are aptly named based on the people the cane was intended to punish. Junior or school canes are the lightest canes used and were first used as disciplinary canes in schools. Senior or adult canes are heavier canes meant for older children and adults. Reformatory canes were meant for “discipline cases” in the reformatory system. The notorious Singapore canes are for those highly experienced in caning.

Public Parties and Bondage Tables

Issue Three is coming. It will be published on August 1st. Here are some teasers to let you know what’s in store.

Featured Furniture: Bondage Tables by Mechanica

The earliest forms of bondage tables were found in medieval dungeons. Bondage tables in medieval dungeons were used primarily for the same purpose as they are used today: to restrain a victim while lying down in order to allow various torments or pleasures to be inflicted upon them. The tortures in medieval times, however, were significantly more nefarious than those used by kinksters today.

Articles Coming Together

Just over a month to go and a lot of work yet to do. It’s been one hell of a month, but I’m making up for lost time. The Practical Touches and Safety First articles are now complete – Layout and Public Party Concerns respectively. This morning I took notes from my interview with Master Shadow, rayne and bev. And I have notes for the Setting the Mood article on Decoration. Three articles ready to be pulled together. Due date is Sunday. I think I’m going to make it. Then, while I’m on vacation, I can start putting pictures with the appropriate articles and have it ready for my editor by the time we get back on the 10th.

I added a couple new sites to my Links Page, including JT’s Stockroom, with a referral link, so yes, if you click and then buy something, I get a small return on it. If there’s anyone else who wants to be on that page, please drop me a line either through email at Modern Dungeon Quarterly at gmail dot com or through the Contact Us page.

I’m very excited for Issue Three, but don’t forget Issue One and Issue Two are still for sale over at MagCloud with all the pictures included, or you can sign up here and read them online for free.

Dungeon Secured

I wasn’t sure if I was going to have anything to post today. But surprise! I have secured the next Dungeon and Creator for issue three. I am very happy to report that our third issue will be another private dungeon, perhaps even a little more private than the first two. And our creator is one who vends his wares at local events. Thank you, Master Shadow, for agreeing to be my third Creator and Dungeon owner.

Maybe next year, I’ll move on to more public spaces. Though, with COPE ticket secured, I’m hoping that will work out to be my fourth and final issue for 2012.

I am very excited about this upcoming issue. Be sure to check out the previous two issues here on the site and over at Magcloud. All the articles of Issue Two are now posted. Including The Monkey King’s article on Setting the Mood with Music and Mechanica’s Tips and Tricks for Cleaning Bodily Fluids.

Issue Two Available Next Week!

It’s almost time. The next issue will be released on May 1st, less than a week away. In the meantime, here are a few more teasers from the articles you’ll get in this brand new issue.

Practical Touches
Hiding from Prying Eyes

You have great ideas, an awesome space, and toys and furniture on order. But you also have kids, nosy in-laws, and vanilla friends who like to visit. How do you keep your dungeon a secret, and protect your loved ones’ sensibilities? There are a lot of options available, from simple to complex to creative.

The simplest answer is to lock the dungeon door. This is exactly what our first featured dungeon owners used to do. The room was off-limits and locked while her child was a minor. This works best if there are no budding locksmiths in the house, but it can also make the secret that much more tantalizing. Nothing is so desirable as something you cannot have.

Tips & Tricks
Bodily Fluids
by Mechanica

The quicker you get to a fluid spill in your dungeon, the easier it will be to clean and the less likely to stain. It is ideal to get to a spill just after it happens or at least before it has dried. Once a spill has dried, more intense cleaning comes into play.

It is important to remember that bodily fluids are protein based. This means that warm or hot water will set the stain rather than cleaning it so stick to cold water when trying to clean bodily fluids. Also, use detergents and soaps that contain enzymes to clean fluid stains as these will help to break down the proteins and lift the stain.

The ease or difficulty with which a bodily fluid is cleaned is primarily dependent upon the surface on which is has spilled.

Issue Two Teasers: Music and Spanking Benches

Teasers from upcoming articles in Modern Dungeon Quarterly’s Spring Issue:

Featured Furniture: Spanking Benches
Corporal punishment has a long and colorful history, but spanking benches themselves are a relatively new development. While certainly inspired by the various positions one might be punished in, the benches themselves were wholly developed by the BDSM community starting in the late 19th century. Mrs Theresa Berkley, a 19th century British dominatrix, is known for her creation of the Berkley Horse, but this device held the victim in a fairly upright position, instead of bent over as most spanking benches are designed now.

Setting the Mood: Music
The preferred dungeon music for any given play space can be as varied as the individuals involved in the community. There is someone I know who might prefer to have every one of her scenes accompanied by the CD from Metallica entitled “S&M”. That wouldn’t work very well for most people however. Some people can find themselves very distracted when they play if the music playing has any words or singing. They find themselves wanting to sing along with the song they recognize which takes away from the energy of their scenes. Whereas some others find that a song they know and love can energize them, and allow them to put more into their play. Let’s talk about how to accommodate as many people as possible with your musical choices for your local play spaces.
